design innovation happens when the established part-whole relationships are disrupted. from the bladeless fan by dyson, to the 3d-printed unibody midsoles by new balance, these radical designs emerge when the part-whole organizations are redefined and reconfigured. this study aims to rethink part-whole relationship: to inspire new definitions for parts and arrive at out-of-the-ordinary wholes. it begins with analyzing, extracting and discretizing bush strokes of a selected painting. through visual computing calculation, the captured shapes and its unfoldment are utilized to create the final pattern. computer programming and digital fabrication is used to refine the geometry and generate the physical prototype.
